Yes, muntik na nga ako madukutan sa bus nung isang araw.�

I was walking down the aisle to get off the bus nang magpalit ng aisle seats ang isang ale at isang mama. Pagdating ko sa tapat nila, tumayo ulit ang mama. May dala siyang backpack na nakasabit sa harapan niya. Akala ko bababa na rin siya. Pero tumayo lang sa tapat ko.�

Nag-"excuse me!" ako pero di siya tumabi ni umusad. Hinintay ko siya dhail akala ko may kinukuha lang siya sa bag. Hanggang may maramdaman akong ibang kamay sa loob ng kaliwang bulsa ng pantalon ko.�

Inaabot ng walang-hiya ang cellphone ko!

Binraso ko nga siya sabay sigaw ng "tarantado ka ah!"

Natigilan din siya. At pinadaan niya na ako.�

Pagbaba ko ng bus, nakita kong bumaba din siya. Naisip kong balikan siya at sigawan ng "mandurukot" at suntukin. Pero sabi ko he's so not worth getting any more worked up over.

Kaya tumuloy na ako sa pupuntahan ko.

Malamang bagong modus ito. Yung magpapalit ng upuan ang mga hitad tapos sabay dukot sa dumadaan na pasahero. Beware!

Minsan nag-taxi ako mula Makati papuntang Shaw. Pumatak sa P92.50 ang metro. Inabutan ko ng isang daan ang driver. Sabi ba naman niya, "Pwede dagdagan mo?" Seryoso ang tono, hindi nakikiusap na may ngiti sa mukha. "Bakit?" lang ang naisagot ko. "Kahit sampung piso lang," balik niya sa akin, wala pa ring kababaang-loob ang tono. Pinunto ko sa kanya na "92.50 nga lang yang metro o!" habang hinahatak ko ang aking bag. Hindi siya umimik. Pagbukas ko ng pinto at habang lumalabas ako sa taxi sabi ko, "Dapat nga sinusuklian n'yo pa ako!" Akala ko tuluyan nang mananahimik ang driver. Pero hindi. Binigyan niya ako ng matalim na tingin at sabi, "Wala na nga akong sinabi eh." Natigalgal ako sa kapal ng mukha ng driver at hindi na nakapagsalita. Isinara ko na lang ng malakas ang pinto ng taxi.

Nangyari ito sa National Heroes Day.�

Feast Day

A priest told this story.

One day in college he and a classmate went to Jollibe. They had just taken a long and difficult exam and they wanted to treat themselves. So they ordered two trays full of food.�

As soon as they sat down on their table in came a young boy and his dad.�The boy was in school uniform, the dad in a pair of old faded jeans and a plain white tee. There was a white face towel hanging from his neck. He was carrying a wooden box. It was obvious that he was a jeepney driver and that he was just on a break from work.

The boy and dad sat beside the two college students. There was a lone burger and just one small glass of softdrink in their food tray. The dad greeted his son, "Happy birthday anak!"�

The two college students' hearts melted instantly. And they ended up sharing their food to the boy and his dad.

My heart melted too upon hearing the story, especially since it reminded me�of a similar personal encounter I had in college.

It happened during an outreach program where I had volunteered as a tutor in a public grade school in Quezon City. It was home visit day, which meant us volunteers chatting with our students' folks.�

In the course of my conversation with the mother of one of my wards, she told me how she encourages her kids to keep studying well. "Lagi kong sinasabi sa kanila mag-aral ng mabuti. At kapag nagka-honor sila, mag-ja-Jollibee kami." (I always tell them to study hard. And if they end the year with honors, we will celebrate in Jollibee.")
