Isla Planeta
Yey, I'm a published amateur photographer now! And in an international travel book no less. My photo, "Isla Azul", which I took during a trip to Camiguin last year, is one of only 10 that were chosen by the editors of "Blue List 2008", a Lonely Planet publication, from among contributions from all over the world. (I didn't really send it in. Never even heard of the book until one of the editors, who saw the photo in my Flickr page, emailed me.) It's the only photo from the Philippines and I'm the only Pinoy photog who made it in this year's edition of the book, which is published annually from Australia. Yey! The book's very nice and will make a good Christmas present for the travel enthusiast. It's a bit pricey, though, at P1,000+. But, yey! You can see the full pic in one of the photo albums here and in flickr.com/photos/chriscab. Yey!

Da Di
Happy Undas Pilipinas! And in the spirit of the occasion, I bring you this story about my dead dad (should we just call him deadpa?). It's my last dream of him from two years ago (he's been dead seven years then) that I thought I'd resurrect here and now. In it dad is throwing a house blessing party for our new home, an apartment-type that looks eerily like the one we now call home and not at all like the proper house we used to live in when dad was still alive. (Hindi na naabutan ng tatay ko ang balay na ito.) The scene takes place in the living room at the start of the party. Dad is by the main door giving a speech. It starts out predictably, boringly enough with some welcome remarks. Then he tells everyone how happy he was that the entire family was there and how he hopes that the new home will be a happier place for all of us. It's here when father starts to become emotional. It's also here when the comedy begins. As tears start to well from dad's eyes somebody lets out a big, fat, loud fart. Everyone hears this except, it seems, my old man. Out of deference to dad we all do our darndest best to stifle our laughter. Most of us are able to keep it to ourselves and those that aren't are at least able to keep the volume down. Then a few moments later one of my plumpier aunts leans a bit too heavily on one of the cocktail tables, causing it to tilt over and throwing off all the pastry on it including the big round party cake in the middle. She tries to salvage it but only manages to dig her hands as deep as the layer of thick white icing on it. Aunt's eyes enlarge and look as though they're about to pop out from mortification but her face lightens up and her lips widen into a devilish grin. She then puts out her tongue and starts devouring the icing off her fingers. More stifled laughter. Dad, meanwhile, remains unperturbed, pausing only to wipe away his tears as he continues to blabber on. And then -- and then! -- just as dad seems on the verge of breaking down, the kids playing outside the house suddenly decide to go for a change of playground. They kick the door open, slamming it on dad's face, and barge into the living room laughing and screaming. Quickly realizing there isn't much ground for them to play in inside the house, the kids promptly dash back out. Again slamming the door on father's face. This time stifling proves futile and everybody erupts into wild laughter. Me included. In fact I laughed so hard I literally woke myself up from that dream. Mas lalo akong natawa. At nahirapan na ako matulog.

Grand Canyon
Each feat elicited wild cheers and applause from his amazed audience. But it wasn't until after the last walk when they got up on their feet and shouted. "You're the greatest!" one particularly awe-struck fellow exclaimed at the top of his voice.
The trapeze artist was quick with a reply. He told his audience that he would make another trek with the wheelbarrow. But he'll do away with the sand and replace it with something even more challenging to carry. And then he turned his gaze to the raving fellow and requested him to jump onto the wheelbarrow. The fellow turned ashen in terror and could hardly move, much less give an answer.
An analogy is made between the raving fellow and the hollow, uncommitted "faithful". Their professions and declarations are mere lip service. They close themselves and pull away when they're asked to walk the talk, literally and figuratively.

Dwelling
Where are you now, my beloved? I seek you east of midmorning in oceans of noise resembling songs but my voice finds no silencing. Like wings searching for their nest my hymns of weeping and rejoicing yearn to take their sanctuary there in your reveling.
Where are you now, my beloved? I search for you south of dusk in gardens of shapes resembling letters but my hands find no releasing. Like dew seeking its ground the lines I write crave to fulfill their prophesies of sun-drenched conversations – winding, exhausting, wordless – there in your accepting.
You found my soul on a flowerless day in May and in you my soul found its dwelling. Then you found the wind and you rowed quietly to your leaving. Now my heart hears no repeating, only walls and a roof and there is no breathing, there is no uprooting.
And I am satisfied. Memory loves company.

Frat You!
Another hazing, another senseless death. When will fraternities realize that this practice reveals only intellectual, spiritual, and moral bankruptcy? That not owning up to it and to the crimes that ensue from it is the ultimate in cowardice? That the ideals of brotherhood, courage, and loyalty mean absolutely nothing when the very lives that are supposed to live out and bear witness to them are taken away? This must end. Now.

Movies' worth
Very well then...
THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, about Jason Bourne's quest for his identity, is worth 10 consecutive rides in Enchanted Kingdom's Space Shuttle. It made my head and stomach twist and turn from all that verite-style camera work and fast cuts.
WAITRESS, about a waitress (Felicity's Keri Russell) who has an almost supernatural skill for baking unbelievably forget-your-name pies, is worth several plates of spicy Italian pasta. It made me want to eat a whole roll of chocolate cake.
HAIRSPRAY, about a singing and dancing John Travolta in drag, is worth a full bottle of uppers. It made me want to shi-freaking-mmy from the theater all the way to the house.
A LOVE STORY, about Aga's fabulously sculpted new bod, is worth an "excellence in marketing" award. It made me want to hit the gym every day of the week.

Ako. Baket?! Hindi masama mangarap.
May bagong CD sila. And by sila, I mean Mike (katabi ko), Mark (katabi ni Mike), and Japs (katabi ni Mark). ‘Di na kasali si Rico. Kasi tinanggal na niya ang sarili niya sa banda.
Ang title ng CD ay Bagong Liwanag. Kasi 'di na kasali si Rico. Narinig ko na. Sa listening party for select members of the media. Kamusta? Maganda!!! Tunog ‘90s.
Later in the year pa daw ang full album. By then may bagong lead vocalist na sila. Sa ngayon palitan sila ni Mike, Mark at Japs sa pagkanta.

Watch out!
I don’t really care.
What am I so huffy about with the P30,000 diver’s watch that my friend recently bought for himself? I’ll tell you.
1. I have an aunt who’s quite poor she visits me at home every Sunday to ask for some financial help. I wish I could give her more than P200.
2. The mothers we interview for our concept and post-ad researches each have a daily budget of only P200 maximum to spend for all the needs of her entire family of 5-6.
3. I once met a family for whom Jollibee is a special occasion treat, such as when one of the children finishes the school year with honors.
4. Once a year during our parish outreach program, I meet entire families who call the streets of Manila home.
And my friend isn’t even an effing diver! That makes the watch pure vanity. That’s okay. Vanities are fine for as long as they don’t come with such a huge price tag. Then it becomes a crime in my book.
And don’t even start with me on how a good watch is an investment. Anyone wants an investment? Just look around.

A lot of exciting things happened to me this past week.
1. A song of mine has been released to radio as a single.
2. Two new TV commercials I wrote that I'm very pleased with started airing.
3. I joined my first on-the-spot photo contest.
4. We finally transferred to our new shabby chic office.
Details and photos to follow.
Sana lang our company admin stops being so stingy with the multiply access in the office.

Hollywood, finally!
The last time a Pinoy had a major supporting role in a Hollywood movie was three years ago when Cesar Montano played the role of Capt. Pajota in the WWII film "The Great Raid". Prior to that the first and only time a local talent headlined a Hollywood film was in the 50s when Barbara Perez was cast as the leaidng lady in another war film, "No Man's Land".
Behind the cameras, this is the first time ever that a Filipino director is helming a mainstream Hollywood movie. A monumental achievement -- one worthy of a presidential citation, I declare!
Shooting takes place in Toronto and New York in September. This "echo" should be ready to fill cinemas next year.
Attached photo is a still of Iza from "Sigaw".

Presence, not presents
2. When Jesus visited them, they did two different things.
3. Martha busied herself preparing a meal for Jesus.
4. Mary simply sat with Jesus and listened to him.
5. Martha wanted Jesus to reprimand Mary for not helping her out.
6. Jesus told Martha that Mary has chosen the better part.
7. The operative word is better.
8. Action is good. Action from listening is better.
9. The Lord wants presence -- his in our lives, ours in other people's lives -- which is infinitely more important than presents.
10. We can't give out what we don't have.

4.0
I caught a screening of Die Hard 4.0 last night. In a bus bound for Fairview from Ayala. Pero hindi ko natapos ang movie kasi bumaba na ako sa Cubao. BUt I saw enough of it to have these 4.0 things to say.
1.0 'Di naman masyado galit sa kotse ang direktor 'no.
2.0 Justin Long looks like Anthony Keidis of Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Throughout the movie, or at least the first half of it that I saw, I kept expecting he would start singing "give it away, give it away, give it away now!"
3.0 Ang late-'80s ng idea of an all-powerful computer system as villain.
4.0 In fairness, hindi masama ang kopya ng movie that the bus screened. 'Di siya direct disc-to-disc copy, though, I think. Pero di rin naman siya kinunan from inside a moviehouse, I think. (But I wouldn't know really kasi hindi ako nanonood ever ng pirated.) At isa pang in fairness, maganda ang sound system ng bus.

Top 10: Current Annoyances
1. Cash register attendants who ask: “May smaller bill po kayo?” Aba ‘neng, kung meron eh di yun sana ang binigay ko sa ‘yo!
2. Lady passengers in the MRT who are just too lazy to take a few more steps to the first coach, which is devoted exclusively for them.
3. MRT passengers who station themselves near the doors and refuse to go farther inside, blocking the commuters outside from coming in.
4. Paris Hilton.
5. Lame threequels (Spiderman, Shrek, Pirates, Ocean’s).
6. Isaiah Washington’s blame game. First it was T.R. Knight. Now he’s saying it was Patrick Dempsey’s fault he made the homophobic slur that got him in hot water last year and eventually got him axed from Grey’s Anatomy. Shut up already!
7. Sanctimonious broadcasters. (I’m looking at you, Ted Failon, and you, Korina Sanchez.)
8. All those gabfests in late-night radio. FM used to mean furo music. Now it’s fuera music. Teynks gad for the iPod.
9. Local entertainment media’s continued obsession with the sordid personal affairs of B-level actresses Gretchen Barreto and Ruffa Gutierrez…
10. …And it’s non-existent coverage of the Hollywood breakthrough of world-class Pinoy director Yam Laranas, who’s remaking his own film, “Sigaw”, with the producers of “The Ring” and “The Grudge”! Haay.

Pathetic
After the interview, though, he said something along these lines: Kung naging mayaman lang ang biktima sigurado akong nahuli kaagad ang mga suspects… Due process, due process!
What the…! It’s one thing to deride law enforcers for the preferential treatment they (allegedly!) give the rich but it’s an entirely different thing to openly advocate lawlessness.
I don’t hold the police force in high esteem myself but this, this is just wrong. That it came from a veteran broadcaster makes it pathetic. BUti na lang hindi siya nanalo when he ran for Congressman. I shudder thinking about the kinds of misguided laws he might've concocted.

The Old Lady At The ATM Counter
Her hair was swept in an updo and she was wearing makeup and jewelry – a pair of diamond earrings (they looked fake, though) and a set of three diamond-encrusted gold rings (again probably fake) on each middle finger.
I thought she was just resting after a tiring trip to the mall (she was dozing off). Perhaps she was waiting for her daughter and apo to finish shopping. And then I noticed the blue paper bag lying on the ground near her feet. In it was one open pack of cigarettes, two sealed packs, and lots of gum and mint candy.
Nothing in her looks said she was a vendor. And at that time it struck me as rather unwise of her to choose such a low-traffic area for her trade.
Questions arose in my head. She was a vendor all right. But who was she? Why was she vending when she looked like she didn’t need to? Why did she look the way she did if she needed to vend?
The only character sketch I thought was a satisfactory explanation was this: she used to be rich. Or at least had enough money to live comfortably and afford niceties such as good clothes and accessories. But she’s fallen on hard times. She can’t quite leave her old life behind, though, and that’s why she continues to hold on to it as much as she can. If not economically at least cosmetically.
Later that night a friend said that she was probably simply trying to avoid being spotted by the Makati police. Vending, he told me, is unlawful in the city. Looking like a shopper and being inconspicuous about her job was her way of not calling attention to herself.
Okay, that made sense. But a question remained. Why did she station herself there, in between two traffic intersections that were being manned by several law enforcers?

From the archive: Loko
this announcement has long been forthcoming. now i can finally make it official. i've landed my first record deal for one of my orignal compositions. the song is a midtempo love ballad entitled "loko" and it's one of four tracks in the debut cd of new teen pop-rock artist angeli mae. the cd is now available in record bars everywhere under the viva records label.
there. it feels so, so good to finally let this story out after holding on to it for months. i didn't want to preempt or jinx it in any way so i kept it a secret all this time. the story started february when i wrote and recorded the song and sent demos to three labels. viva called in march and the song got produced in may. the cd was initially scheduled for release end-june, then rescheduled for mid-july, then got bumped off for august 30.
you can't imagine the excitement i carried when i went to the record bar that day. you also can't imagine the disappointment i felt when i didn't see the cd there. or anywhere else. i checked back again every single day thereafter. i also checked with my contact in viva at the end of the week. he said it's been shipped to the record stores and that most likely the stores are still in the process of making inventory and labeling the cds. he advised me to check the stores again the following tuesday, the regular release day of new records. (it's what wednesday is to new movies.)
i did. still no angeli mae. she would not appear on the record store shelves until two tuesdays later. at this point my excitement had already subsided and picking up the cd of my professional recording debut didn't feel special. only unusual. and funny. both for me and, moreso, the salesladies in the store. after all i got 5 copies. the cashier had to double check with me not just once but twice if i was indeed buying those many copies. of the same cd. of a new unknown artist. i can tell she thought it was weird, i was weird. her smiling face threatened to break into laughter. for a moment i considered explaining myself. but then i thought that would be too defensive. and proud and shameless. so i just nodded my head and gave a wide smile. i too threatened to break into laughter.
please do get a copy of the cd. it's fun, it's melodic, and it rocks popfully (or pops rockfully). and that's no loko.

Little Princess No More
These days Sarah Geronimo is singing a different tune. A very different tune.
In her surprising, risky new CD, Becoming, she purrs about “running wild”(!), buzzes about touching that “feels like fire”(!!), and coos about “making love till the dawn”(!!!).
Yes, that’s the new Sarah for you (Miss Geronimo if you’re nasty!). Little princess no longer, she has become a heady, worldly young woman who’s practically imploding with sensual passion.
But don’t worry. It’s all just for the record.
“Sana po mag-mature na ang pag-iisip,” Sarah intimates with a sheepish smile during the sit-down for this story. We are at the lounge in Amerasian Studios, where Viva artists record their albums, and Sarah has just come from a three-hour session laying down the vocals to 2 additional songs for the repackaged Bituing Walang Ningning teleserye soundtrack CD.
Dressed in tight light baby blue jeans, baby pink shirt, and a cream-colored distressed cotton jacket, hair kept in a ponytail, Sarah looks very, well, Sarah. Girly. Teeny. And when she talks it’s still all sweet naiveté.
So when she tells you that becoming mature is one of her wishes for herself for her 18th birthday (last July 25), you wish the same thing for her. If only so that she can engage in a meatier discussion of the daring new themes and sounds she explores in Becoming.
Sarah admits having a hard time doing the record. But it had little to do with the mature, if not outright adult themes in this 14-track collection of non-tweetums material.
“Na-pressure po ako!” she says. “Kasi yung ibang songs po ni-record namin sa States nung may tour kami. Medyo ngarag-ngarag nga kasi hinahatak lang po kami para mag-record [in between shows].”
There was little time to study the material, much less to revise their original arrangements to the higher, belting ranges that Sarah is used to and actually prefers. But it’s all perfectly fine with her. “Very foreign!” she enthuses about the album’s sound.
Working with non-Pinoys (headed by US-based producer Christian de Walden) added extra pressure. “Nakakapanibago nung una kasi first time ko [to work with foreigners] at sa abroad pa ang recording. Pero mababait naman po sila. At ang gagaling!”
The same can be said of Sarah. Adventurous, confident, inventive even, the 18-year old successfully transitions from teen-pop princess to OPM royal lady-in-waiting with this sophisticated record. No more vocal acrobatics and histrionics, thank you. Her voice has become deeper, richer; her singing more elegant, layered, soulful.
So don’t go looking for the wailing lovestruck adolescent of “How Could You Say You Love Me”. She has grown into the strong, quietly secure lover of “I Still Believe In Loving You”, Becoming’s gorgeously mellow, guitar-kissed Toni Braxton-lite opening track and carrier single, where Sarah tenderly but assuredly sings “I’m not sure why you were leaving / But I’m gonna let your heart go free / You won’t see me cry”.
That’s just for starters. There are the aforementioned bits about running wild (in the standout country-ish upbeat track “Baby Blue”), touching (in the Santana-lite pop/salsa number “You Mean The World To Me”) and making love (in the sexy, jazzy groover “Is This Love?”).
And the 18-year old sounds so convincing throughout she makes you totally forget that this is a Sarah Geronimo record. That’s the genius of her work here.
Stress on the work. Sarah hasn’t had any real experiences of the sort she sings about in the album. (Her brushes with romance and love have so far been limited to “crushes lang”.)
So how did she manage to do justice to these songs? “Kinuha ko lang ang emotions ng mga kanta, inilagay ko ang sarili ko sa situations and just imagined.”
Sarah sure makes it sound like child’s play.

Closing Cycles
One always has to know when a stage comes to an end. If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we lose the happiness and the meaning of the other stages we have to go through.
Closing cycles, shutting doors, ending chapters whatever name we give it, what matters is to leave in the past the moments of life that have finished. Did you lose your job? Has a loving relationship come to an end? Did you leave your parents' house? Gone to live abroad? Has a long-lasting friendship ended all of a sudden?
You can spend a long time wondering why this has happened. You can tell yourself you won't take another step until you find out why certain things that were so important and so solid in your life have turned into dust, just like that. But such an attitude will be awfully stressing for everyone involved: your parents, your husband or wife, your friends, your children, your sister, everyone will be finishing chapters, turning over new leaves, getting on with life, and they will all feel bad seeing you at a standstill.
None of us can be in the present and the past at the same time, not even when we try to understand the things that happen to us. What has passed will not return: we cannot forever be children, late adolescents, sons that feel guilt or rancor towards our parents, lovers who day and night relive an affair with someone who has gone away and has not the least intention of coming back.
Things pass, and the best we can do is to let them really go away.
That is why it is so important (however painful it maybe!) to destroy souvenirs, move, give lots of things away to orphanages, sell or donate the books you have at home. Everything in this visible world is a manifestation of the invisible world, of what is going on in our hearts - and getting rid of certain memories also means making some room for other memories to take their place.
Let things go. Release them. Detach yourself from them. Nobody plays this life with marked cards, so sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. Do not expect anything in return, do not expect your efforts to be appreciated, your genius to be discovered, your love to be understood. Stop turning on your emotional television to watch the same program over and over again, the one that shows how much you suffered from a certain loss: that is only poisoning you, nothing else.
Nothing is more dangerous than not accepting love relationships that are broken off, work that is promised but there is no starting date, decisions that are always put off waiting for the ideal moment.
Before a new chapter is begun, the old one has to be finished: tell yourself that what has passed will never come back. Remember that there was a time when you could live without that thing or that person. Nothing is irreplaceable. A habit is not a need. This may sound so obvious, it may even be difficult, but it is very important.
Closing cycles. Not because of pride, incapacity or arrogance, but simply because that no longer fits your life. Shut the door, change the record, clean the house, shake off the dust. Stop being who you were, and change into who you are.
Let go

Conversation Peace
We were never close, my father and I. He worked as a ship captain and was away most of the time. When he came home for breaks in-between assignments we barely talked. We hardly did things together either.
Father kept mostly to himself. He didn't talk much and, as far as I can tell, he didn't really enjoy company. Not even his own family's. When he's not lounging in the living room watching basketball on TV or enjoying his music (The Platters was his favorite) by his lonesome -- bottle of beer in hand, cigarette in mouth -- he'd be busy doing little repairs on the house.
Occasionally he'd have me help him out with some chore. And every time it really did feel like a chore. Not the actual work itself but being with him. It was not enjoyable. At all. Even when we did not say a thing to each other.
All my life I felt a heaviness inside whenever I've had to deal with my father. Except this one time. It happened on an Easter Sunday. I had just come home from mass and I was listening to a CD of inspirational music when I felt like picking up the phone. I did and I dialed my father's number. I'd been living with my sister then and my dad and I haven't spoken with each other for two years.
He picked up the phone, I said hello, greeted him "Happy Easter" and asked how he was, he said he was fine, I told him that Tata, my elder sister, was in the hospital because of some tummy problem, he said he'd visit later that day, I told him it was great talking to him, he said he was happy I called, I bade him to take care of himself, he promised to, I said goodbye, he said goodbye, and we hung up. The entire call lasted less than 5 minutes.
I consider that the first real conversation that my father and I shared. It was also our last. He died from a slipping accident at home 6 days later.
